This past year for me was an eventful learning experience and I’m so grateful for it. I’ve been a bit quiet lately, preparing for a few big changes coming up in 2023. So let’s dive right in.
I’ll be a Vermonter!
Starting in January, I’m relocating to—you read that right—the great green state of Vermont. New England is in my heart and soul, and I’m so excited to be that much closer to snow as we enter the best time of year: ski season. If anyone wants to wallow in what it was like to purchase a home in 2022, I’m there.
Montreal & Boston data communities: you’ll see me around next year! And for anyone in the Burlington area: let’s start a meetup.
What about my product idea?
My policy has always been complete honesty, which is the main reason for sharing my ideas for improving the way SaaS tools are configured within marketing and sales teams. After talking to over 100 operators, the idea has transformed several times, with the goal remaining the same: reducing SaaS debt.
It doesn’t take much to imagine the difficulty (financial, logistical, emotional) of purchasing a home and starting a company at the same time. This project is taking a bit of a back seat while I settle in to all of these exciting changes.
To clarify, a back seat doesn’t mean not in the car. There’s so much to do when it comes to how marketing teams function, and I’m excited to chip away at this problem from a different angle (the exact angle has yet to be fully defined).
Lastly, I spoke earlier this year about not having as tight knit marketing communities as we do in data. Since then, I’ve gotten recommendations on a few, including: MOPs Professionals, Lenny’s Community, and Reforge. There’s still so much more I can contribute here, but also punting this down the line in lieu of what’s to come.
Up next: a new opportunity
While I am still consulting (and probably always will be to some degree), I thrive in an extremely goal oriented environment. Consulting has exposed me to so much and will always be a piece of my professional journey to fill different curiosities. However, consulting full-time isn’t the environment in which I do my best work.
I’ve been an analyst, a data scientist, and a data engineer; an engineering and data mindset will always be part of the way I think. I’ve also been doing marketing work for over two years now in some capacity, and love working with startups. I’m driven by challenge and curiosity. What better way to be challenged than experiencing organizational growth from the perspective of a new department?
With that, I’ll be joining Prefect as Growth Lead.
I’m excited by the ambition of the team and their focus on revenue growth. More importantly, I’m bullish on a UI-first experience that is both out of the box and customizable with code when necessary. I’ve said before that the data tooling space is far too fragmented—tools than can do orchestration are perfectly positioned to help in what I think is inevitable consolidation.
Lastly, let’s chat
I’ll be taking off most of January to move/house renovate/etc, but after that I’ll be back in full swing. I’m always happy to chat about data, marketing, tech, startups, you name it. Reach out on LI, Twitter or reply directly to this newsletter.
Until then, happy holidays, and on to new adventures ✌️
Congrats Sarah on the move and home-buying! I just bought a house last month, so I feel your pain but also the excitement. And Prefect is an amazing company, excited to see what you do there!
Welcome to New England, Sarah!
Good luck with the move and renovation. Looking forward to connecting in the Boston area as you get settled.
